The CONCACAF Champions Cup (often referred to as the Champions Cup) was the predecessor to the current CONCACAF Champions League and was the premier club football competition for teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Established in 1962, it was originally a way to crown the best club team in the region, featuring clubs from countries like Mexico, the United States, Costa Rica, and more. The tournament operated in a knockout format, with the champions of each country’s domestic league qualifying for the competition. Mexican clubs, particularly, dominated the early years of the tournament, with teams like Club América and Cruz Azul regularly winning titles.
In 2008, the CONCACAF Champions Cup was restructured and replaced by the CONCACAF Champions League, which introduced a more modern format, including a group stage and more countries' participation. This change allowed for a more robust and competitive structure that reflects the evolving nature of football in the region. The Champions Cup, while no longer active, laid the foundation for the current tournament and helped elevate the profile of club football in the CONCACAF region, setting the stage for the development of the more widely recognized CONCACAF Champions League today.
