Dementia Home Rescue: Overcoming Cleaning Challenges (Part 1)

When his worried family saw photos of the garbage and clutter piling up in his home, they knew they had to act—and they called me in. I arrived to find every flat surface buried under discarded takeout containers, clothes strewn from corner to corner, and grimy dishes caked in last week’s dinners. The stench of mold hung in the air, and a trail of mouse droppings led me from the entryway all the way to the bedroom.

Together, we set to work. First, we removed bag after bag of trash and handed off any salvageable items for donation. I scrubbed the bathroom tiles until they sparkled, cleared the kitchen counters so he could cook safe meals again, and vacuumed the living room to banish years of dust and debris.
