얀 파브르는 '파브르 곤충기'의 저자이자 곤충학자로 유명한 장 앙리 파브르의 증손자입니다. 1958년 벨기에 태생으로 화가, 조각가, 연극 연출가, 안무가, 무대 및 의상 디자이너 등 다양한 분야를 넘나들며 활동하는 유럽의 대표적 예술가입니다.
파브르의 그림을 보면 곤충의 특징을 적절하게 집어내어 그 특질로 이름을 지은 것들을 볼 수 있습니다. 파브르는 그러한 작업을 인간을 통해 찾고 있습니다. 또한 곤충을 관찰하면서 댄서들의 트레이닝 방법도 고안해내고 있습니다. 예를 들어 바위를 끊임없이 기어오르는 곤충의 움직임을 무용수에게 춤으로 표현하게 하기도 합니다.
"나는 시각예술을 공부할 때 해부학을 공부했었습니다. 그것을 토대로 곤충들과 동물들, 인간의 움직임을 비교해서 새로운 움직임을 창조하기도 합니다. 나는 곤충을 아주 중요하게 생각하는데 곤충은 지구상에 가장 오래된 컴퓨터라고 할 수 있습니다."
얀 파브르는 " 체액 3부작 '나는 피다 Je suis sang', '울고 있는 육체 The Crying Body'에 이은 2005년 아비뇽패스티벌의 개막작품인 '눈물의 역사' 공연에서 눈물의 근원을 말하고 눈물의 의미를 새롭게 부여하면서 서양의 오랜 역사에서 이성의 그늘에 묻혀 있던 눈물의 역사를 재조명합니다. '' 몸 속의 액체에는 영혼이 담겨 있어요. 그러므로 눈물뿐 아니라 오줌, 피, 땀 등의 액체에서 인간의 삶의 메아리가 나오는 거에요. 19세기에는 ‘금’, 20세기는 ‘오일(연료)’이 최고의 가치였다면 21세기는 ‘물’이 될 것입니다." 얀 파브르의 연출은 아이콘이나 상징 등이 매우 풍부합니다. 마치 ‘각주없는 유럽 중세사’를 펼쳐놓는 것 같습니다. 작품을 이해하려면 많은 인문적 소양과 지식이 필요합니다. 프랑스의 후기구조주의 철학자인 미셀 푸코나 질 들뢰즈 같은 철학자들의 작업과도 맞물려 있습니다.

Jan Fabre is the author of "The Fabre Insectarian" and the great-grandson of Jean-Henri Fabre, a renowned entomologist. Born in Belgium in 1958, he is a representative European artist who works in various fields, including painter, sculptor, theater director, choreographer, stage and costume designer.
And if you look at Fabre's paintings, you can see that they're appropriately picked up and named for their characteristics. Fabre is looking for that kind of work through humans. They are also looking at insects and come up with ways to train dancers. For example, an insect that climbs up a rock constantly makes a dancer express the movement of an insect as a dance.
"I studied anatomy when I studied visual arts. Based on that, they create new movements by comparing insects with animals and humans. I think insects are very important, and they are the oldest computers on Earth."
Jan Fabre recounts the history of tears buried in the shadow of reason in the long history of the West, telling the source of tears and renewing the meaning of tears during the 2005 Avignon Festival following the body fluid trilogy, "I Am Blood " and "The Crying Body." '' The liquid in the body contains the soul. Therefore, not only tears, but also urine, blood, sweat, and so on, the echoes of human life come out. If gold was the best value in the 19th century and oil in the 20th century, the 21st century would be water." Jan Fabre's production is rich in icons and symbols. It’s like opening up the history of the Middle Ages in Europe. Understanding a work requires a lot of human knowledge and knowledge. It's also tied to the work of philosophers such as Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze, the late French philosopher.
