Sleepy Old Village between Lake and Mountains | Morning Trip to Brusino Arsizio, Switzerland

Today we'll be going on a late summer morning trip to Brusino Arsizio, a picturesque old village on the shore of Lake Lugano, in southern Switzerland.
This small village lies between the lake and an imposing mountain, called Mt. San Giorgio, a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its abundance of fossil deposits. It's also located right on the border with the neighboring Italy!
It's a very scenic place, which can offer both relaxing moments by the lakeside and arduous hikes along mountain trails.

Brusino Arsizio is quite an ancient village, built back during Roman times. In fact its first official mention dates all the way back to the year 1167!
The name seems to originate from the Celtic words 'Brux', which means 'bramble brush', and 'Arx', which means 'tower'. Over the centuries this second word was also associated to the verb 'ardere' ('to burn'): because of that the emblem of the village is a tower going up in flames. :)

For most of its history Brusino was a rather remote place, that could be reached only by boat or mountain trails. The first road was built in 1875, while potable water and electricity were implemented only in the 1910s!
Until then the main activities of the village were small-scale farming, fishing and woodcutting, products of which would be later sold in the nearby city of Lugano.
Once easier to get to, it quickly became a tourist destination, reaching its peak in the late 1950s.

This is a rather fascinating location to visit, but also less well known compared to other destinations on the lake.
Usually there are very few people around, and you can walk along the streets and lakefront of the village completely alone. If you enjoy peace and silence, this is the spot you were looking for!
