The New Stack went on the road to learn about real-time data from experts and industry leaders at State of OpenCon. So what is real-time data? As Avi Press of Scarf puts it, “Real-time data means when you are delivering data insights to users or customers as they happen.” He goes on to explain, “If you’re talking to folks that do embedded hardware, that might be millisecond real, real-time. Whereas a lot of the analytics business insights can be within a couple of minutes and be ‘real-time’.”
“There’s a lot of data coming from a lot of systems. We’re generating more data than we ever have before, and we’re trying to do analytics on it to make smart decisions,” said Sam Weaver of Plural.
“If you’re doing real-time data with algorithms sitting on top, you have to be really focused around finding efficient ways to process signals…and know exactly which of those signals you’re going to prioritize,” shared Sal Kimmich of Escher Cloud.
Bart Farrell, a CNCF Ambassador, explains how real-time data differs from batch processing and added, “The main thing is understanding that it helps us make better decisions, having better information, in real-time.”
