It's a bold title but in my opinion, the little IMSA GTU class Renault 5 turbo from the early 80s has been the race car with the most significant influence on the motorsport world. It's not remembered for its racing pedigree but for what it set in motion. Without it, motorsport would have stayed too dangerous for too long, as the car led to the development of the HANS device.
