A 2,000-year-old shrine in a primeval forest. Shimogamo Shrine is one of Japan's oldest and most venerated shrines. Shimogamo Shrine is one of the two riverside shrines that hosts Kyoto's biggest festival — the Aoi Matsuri. It is among the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan, dating back to the 6th century. This shrine is dedicated to the deity of purification and clean water and sits above an underground spring. Autumn purification festivals are held here.
