ESG and sustainability are often used interchangeably but there are actually some differences between the two words.
According to the United Nations, sustainability is defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability looks beyond a company’s non-financial performance. Sustainability comes from an economic standpoint of view to see how global economy can continue to grow while protecting the environmental and social interests.
Unlike ESG which is governed by regulations, sustainability is guided by general principles. Sustainability is holistic and it works to ensure a sustainable and responsible development while protecting the environmental and social. Also, sustainability applies to all levels from the nation to company, community, and individuals. Sustainable actions can be taken anytime, anywhere by anyone.
In conclusion, ESG focuses on assessing a company’s environmental, social and governance performance for immediate investment decision. On the other hand, sustainability is a larger term that incorporates economic factor and addresses the long-term effects of today’s activities on the environment and society.
