How does water support life on Earth? In this lesson for high school students, we begin our exploration of the hydrosphere by looking at the molecule that makes it up: water! While very familiar to us, water is chemically very unique. Its unusual properties make it essential for life on Earth, as it is the only known molecule that can carry out certain cellular functions and allow the transport of nutrients. Existing naturally in all three phases on Earth, water protects life on our planet by insulating us from heat and providing habitats. This lesson is from MiaPrep's Environmental Science course.
