In this series, I rebuild a Rotary Pick and Place Unit. This mechanism is designed to transfer and rotate parts 180° between conveyors using a linkage system.
🎯 Mechanism Overview: Rotary Pick and Place Unit
The Rotary Pick and Place Unit is a synchronized transfer system designed to transport workpieces from one conveyor belt to another while reorienting them by 180°.
Using a Swing Arm driven by gears and a precise Linkage System, the mechanism performs a dual-action movement: the main arm swings 90° for transfer, while the linkage simultaneously rotates the gripper head by an additional 90°. This allows the unit to Lift, Swing, and Re-orient the part efficiently before placing it down for the next process.
This series will cover:
✔ Full rebuild of the Swing Arm & Linkage system from scratch
✔ Explanation of the synchronized 180° rotation logic
✔ Advanced SolidWorks modeling & mating techniques
✔ Mechanical engineering insights for automation design
✔ Preparation for Motion Analysis and simulation
At the end of this series, we will 3D-print the entire mechanism and assemble the gears and grippers. This will allow us to physically test the synchronized rotation and see how the mechanism performs.
