GlenClosed ep.13 Stob Ghabhar (Part 2)

After first stumbling upon this place by chance back 2021, Stob Ghabhar has became one of our favorite spots to ride in the Scottish backcountry. The zone is fairly hidden but can be viewed from a far at the Rannoch Moor view point on the a82.
The North East face of Stob Ghabhar is a deep and immersive bowl with steep peripheral cliffs extending over 180* around the Coirain Lochain that sits in its center. The landscape lends its self to collecting and holding a good amount of snow from winter storms. The coire is dark and many parts of it don’t any sunlight for the majority of the winter. However from the summit, there is a decent sized hanging coire sitting atop many large buttresses and sheer cliffs.
Connor and Richie on the day that found this place, took a line down the hanging coire and traversed across its face into the guts of the main couloir which leads to the Lochain. It was probably the line of the winter that year for the boys. However still to be claimed on the face of Stob Ghabhar was a steep and narrow gully that cuts its way through the huge buttresses of the mid mountain.
A year later almost to the day Connor was joined by Gavin Reid for a mission to go and ride this gully. We met Gav one day touring the Ben Lawers range, and since then has became solid part of the GlenClosed squad! Gav is an experienced rider and has a good knowledge of the Scottish Backcounty, so we are very pleased to introduce him on screen for the first time!
The fact that this area is a little harder to reach with a lengthy walk to the foot of the mountain and it’s hidden nature mean this zone is much less visited than the more frequented spots in the west highlands, but if your willing to go for it, it’s a true gem of the Scottish backcountry.
