SAVAGE NURSES - Chained To My Heart

I grew up on rock and I always wanted to be the lead singer in a band but somehow always wound up behind a bass guitar. Don’t get me wrong, I was really good at it, but I had the looks, the vocal chops and the moves to be a great frontman. I just wanted to be holding a microphone and not have to worry about any of the music. Back in 1986 I had my chance and I formed my first ever ‘supergroup’ in Edmonton! We were called the SAVAGE NURSES and it was Sherri Leigh Iwaschuk on drums and Jeff Schmidt from DARKROOM on guitar, bass and Mac Plus programming! We had a nice bunch of cool rock tunes and actually played two shows live together. One was some battle of the bands thing and I’ll never forget some dude in the audience yelling ‘WHEN DOES THE BAND COME ON?!’ and of course I yelled back “THE BAND IS HERE, WE ARE THE SAVAGE NURSES AND WE’RE HERE TO KICK SOME ASS!”…then we launched into this tune. He didn’t say another word. Why do I remember this stuff? lol…The other gig was more civil and was the opening slot for Famous Blue Raincoat at the Chinhook Theater in Edmonton. Of course I have the cassette recordings of both shows…I might just torment you with some of it. We recorded this song at Grant McEwan Community College with the great Glen Zielinski at the helm. Grant McEwan had a recording/engineering program and students were encouraged to bring in bands and musical artists to actually get hands-on experience. Several Edmonton bands got their first ever studio recordings done because of that course. Alas, the Nurses ended when Sherri and I were asked to move to Vancouver and join the Sarah McLachlan Band in early ’88. Glen also moved out to Vancouver and joined Sarah’s band as well! It’s not well known but Glen was the original guitarist for the very first Sarah live band! We did one gig together with Glen…the very first Sarah show ever at the New York Theater opening for the Grapes of Wrath. Stephen Nikleva was busy with other projects at the time but Glen would soon leave and Stephen rejoined for all subsequent shows. Anyway…saving music history one song at a time♥
