Painting my Red Sofa Series, Part Two
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
This week’s BobBlast is Part Two of Painting My Red Sofa Series. The concept of a red sofa teamed with a powerful woman.
Remember, a CONCEPT can be a subject you are curious about, or a variation of one idea (concept) repeated over and over. You are not making copies, trying to be exact—rather, you are exploring how many ways can you paint your concept.
On the wall behind me, I show several different variations within this Red Sofa series. Like any painting I am working on, I want to surprise myself—to see something I have never done before.
Watch the Demo. Lots of color… working transparent colors all over the surface so the collage patterns will peek through. I scrap and scratch and draw back into the painting, creating texture.
Even though I have an idea of what I want the final painting to look like, I still allow myself playtime and improvisation. As long as I stay with my concept, I know it will be fine.
My materials have not changed too much from Part One:
•Watercolor paper cut to 15x15 inches, to be mounted on a 16x16 inch wood panel
•Regular Gel Medium is my glue
•Handmade Collage materials—paper with graphics, such as stars, checkerboards, squiggles, etc.
•Black and white Holbein acrylic
•Brushes and paper towels
I added my Holbein Artist Acrylic Paint:
•Marigold (transparent)
•Luminous Opera (transparent)
•Ultramarine Deep
•Compose Blue 2
•Pyrrole Red Light
•Cadmium Red
•Hansa Yellow
•Derwent Sketching Pencil 8B
Part Two ends with the painting, “Stepping Out” almost completed. I am still committed to the concept and the off-balance composition. The first layer of color—and the red sofa is established!
Stay tuned for the next BobBlast, Part Three… where I will complete this painting!
