On the evening of Tuesday, March nineteenth, nineteen thirty-five, the streets of Harlem carried the particular weight of a neighborhood caught between two futures. The air was cold, sharp enough to sting exposed skin, and the sky had darkened to that deep indigo that comes just after sunset in early spring. Lenox Avenue stretched north and south in a corridor of brick tenements, corner stores with hand-painted signs, and poolrooms where men gathered to talk politics, numbers, and survival. The streetlights had come on, casting yellow pools onto the wet pavement, and steam rose from manhole covers in lazy spirals. This was a Tuesday like many others in Harlem, except that on this particular Tuesday, a decision was being made in a second-floor room above a barbershop on one hundred and thirty-fifth street that would reshape the criminal economy of the neighborhood for the next decade.
