War of words erupts between Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, Akhil Gogoi over Zubeen Garg’s death case

A war of words broke out between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife and entrepreneur Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, and Akhil Gogoi, Sivasagar MLA and leader of the Raijor Dal, on October 8 over remarks linked to the death of singer Zubeen Garg.

Riniki Bhuyan Sarma has filed a criminal defamation case against Gogoi (CR Case No. 502/25) at the Kamrup Metro CJM court, alleging that Gogoi falsely claimed her company, Golden Threads of Assam, participated in a fashion show at the North East India Festival in Singapore — even after Zubeen Garg’s death.

Her lawyer, Kishore Dutta, stated that the allegations were “baseless and derogatory,” adding that neither she nor her firms had any connection with the festival’s organising committee.

In a social media post, Riniki appealed for restraint during “difficult times” while taking a dig at Gogoi. She said she would support his fact-finding mission — offering him a first-class ticket to Singapore, five-star accommodation, and logistical assistance — to help him substantiate his claims.

Gogoi, meanwhile, in a series of posts responded sharply, contending that the defamation suit aims to stifle legitimate questions. In one of his posts he said the move “means that apart from praising the government, we cannot say anything about it,” and insisted that no one can stop him from demanding an investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death.

The dispute comes amid an ongoing exchange between Chief Minister Sarma and Gogoi over Zubeen Garg’s death. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the Assam government has made several arrests, including that of Zubeen’s cousin and DSP Sandipan Garg. The SIT has also reported uncovering large financial transactions linked to two of Zubeen’s personal security officers.

The first hearing in the defamation case is scheduled for October 30, 2025.
