Armadillos are extraordinary creatures. They're mammals, but they look like a cross between a reptile and mollusk. People who say that the giraffe is a creature designed by a committee haven't met an armadillo. It was designed by a committee on acid.
Nine-banded armadillos, the species we see here in our backyard, are pretty common in Texas, although our cameras don't catch them that often. They eat insects and are famous, or infamous, for digging holes all over people's yards in their search for grubs. Dan and I don't care about the holes because our yard is a wilderness.
Mating season for armadillos around here is in July, but the fertilized egg doesn't implant and begin developing until November. The babies are born in the spring. There are always 4, and they're always identical - all develop from the same egg.
We were very excited to see this mama armadillo taking her 4 little offspring for an evening walk. The video was recorded in late April last year, so the babies were probably only a month or so old.
A note from TBW: This short was edited by Martin Bludworth, our new video production assistant and Premier Pro expert. Martin joined our team earlier this year and is working with Dan to create videos for publication.
