About 20% of human cancers are associated with virus infections, which can lead to transformation of cells. Making cells immortal places them on the road to cancer. In this lecture we review the discovery of RNA and DNA tumor viruses and how an understanding of how they transform cells lead to an understanding of the mechanisms of cell growth control.
