Have you ever found a treasure at a yard sale, antique shop, or thrift store that you were drawn to and knew it was so special you had to know it’s full story? It happens to me often, but this time it happened in Chattanooga, Tennessee while Joe and I were on one of those short “Let’s go see some fall color” trips. I saw this framed block print of two Siamese cats and immediately grabbed it! I needed to know the story behind the artist, who’s image was taped to the back.
It turns out the artist, Fannie Mennen, was born to Jewish parents in Russia, and was stricken with polio, like my own mother, at s very young age. Her family made a new life for themselves in America when Fannie was only a toddler. She didn’t have an easy life, but she studied and taught art through her long life of 91 years! This is the story of my find, Fanny’s family and legacy, and her final resting place on a beautiful peaceful hillside cemetery with her family in Chattanooga.
