A study called SELECT2 has made a huge breakthrough in how we treat severe strokes. When someone has a bad stroke, it can cause a lot of damage in the brain, making it hard for them to recover. The usual treatment, called thrombectomy, was mostly given to patients with small brain damage. But what about those with bigger brain damage, who can't get this treatment and often suffer more? That's what the SELECT2 study looked into. Researchers performed a research study in several countries, including the United States and Canada, to see if the thrombectomy treatment could help people with large brain damage. They used special scans to identify the patients who had big brain damage and then gave them the treatment. The study started with 352 patients but was stopped early because the treatment was working so well. People who got the treatment were much more likely to improve and be able to move and live independently. This discovery could change the rules for treating severe strokes. Right now, most guidelines say patients can't get thrombectomy if they have a lot of brain damage. But this study shows that it's safe and helpful for these patients too. It means that many more people could get this treatment, which might save lives and make life better for stroke survivors. In the future, researchers will look at even more data to understand who benefits the most from this treatment. This could help thousands of people improve after a severe stroke, and it could also reduce the impact of strokes on society by improving people's lives and productivity.
