Did you know that PCOS is caused by estrogen insufficiency?
PCOS is commonly, and correctly, categorized as an endocrine disorder of androgen excess. Specifically, the body is making too much of the ovarian androgen, testosterone (there are also adrenal androgens, which is a discussion for another time.)
And why does the body make so much testosterone? Well, testosterone is the precursor to ovarian estrogen, estradiol. And PCOS women are poor converters of testosterone to estradiol. So when the brain senses that estradiol levels are lower than optimal, it triggers testosterone production.
Consequently, one of the best and safest ways to minimize testosterone overproduction is to supplement with estradiol. And also with progesterone, which is deficient as well.
