5 Tips for Backing In Your Fifth Wheel | RV Camping Tips

Do you suffer from backing-in phobia!?! 😬😥

Before picking up our RV, Chris has never towed anything before, so backing into a campsite was one of his biggest fears.

He watched 100s of videos of people backing in. He even went down semi truck rabbit holes watching people back in and looking for any tips possible.

We created a list of tips and best practices we would use when we needed to back in.....majority of them we still use to this day!

Well, after 2.5 years of backing into sites, we think we have a few tips that we can provide!

Our number one, best tip that we have is very simple....

Use the words "Driver Side" and "Passenger Side" when giving directions. When you are helping someone back in, your left is different than their left....and which left... turn the truck left or the RV left?

So, when we want the back of the RV to go a certain direction, I will say "driver side" and Chris will do what he needs to do to make that happen.

Tip 2️⃣ - Before backing in, get out and scout the site. Chris will typically walk the site, figure out exactly where he wants the wheels and jacks to be and he will give me a marker and that's where I will try and direct him to.

Tip 3️⃣ - Slow turns! Don't turn the wheel all the way one way, then all the way back another way. Just make slow, subtle movements of the steering wheel.

Tip 4️⃣ - Pulling forward is the best way to go back-in! I know, sounds confusing, but do not be afraid to pull forward to get yourself straight again or to get a better angle.

Tip 5️⃣ - Crowds and neighbors! If they come over to help, just be very nice and polite and say, "Thanks, but I think we're good. If you want to spot the front of the truck, that could be helpful."

We have 360 cameras so Chris typically doesn't need any help up front, but it keeps them out of your way!
