The first section deals with adding a patio cover to a home with an offset roofline, where one side of the house is significantly higher than the other. If you want a flat, level beam for your patio, you generally need to raise the lower section rather than lowering the high section. I explain that cutting deep seat cuts into the higher rafters to force the profile down is often structurally unsafe and frowned upon by engineers. Instead, we use blocks and connect new rafters to the existing ones to raise the lower section, ensuring a solid tie to the house. I also cover how to handle awkward angled beams by mitering them or creating custom-shaped bearing blocks to keep the structure level.
