This is the second part of our 3 part interview with legendary guitarist Al Anderson.
This video features Al Anderson, a guitarist who played with Bob Marley & The Wailers, discussing his musical journey. He recounts moving to England and connecting with musicians like Paul Kossoff, who became a close friend. Anderson's diverse musical interests led him to join the African Jazz highlife group Shakatak.
A pivotal moment came when Chris Blackwell, needing a guitarist for Bob Marley's "Natty Dread" album, called Kossoff, who then recommended Anderson. This led to Anderson meeting Bob Marley at Basing Street Studios. He clarifies the story behind Eric Clapton's famous version of "I Shot the Sheriff," stating that other musicians first convinced Clapton's band to record it, which then boosted Marley's recognition.
Anderson also reflects on playing the iconic guitar solo on the live version of "No Woman No Cry," crediting the inspiration to Tyrone Downie and Carly Barrett's incredible groove. He praises Earl "Chinna" Smith as the greatest guitarist in Jamaica and a generous friend who helped him financially and shared musical knowledge without competition.
