The Baobab has fallen; I will mourn, not moan; For Soul Makossa; Rest Not In Peace!
About a year ago, Twikale wa Kalonda came to visit in in the village. Yes that one of Mangelepa's Nyako Konya Rhythm Guitar! After walking through the village forest we settled to rest. We started fiddling with guitars, and after a while he recorded a very very short rhythm skit based on something I'd been playing earlier, and told me: "Ndugu yangu, eneza hiyo!" (My brother, develop that one!)
Last night Manu Dibangu passed on, just about 3 weeks after I cryptically dedicated a Facebook party to him. This evening, as the sun set on the village, I couldn't help visualising the sad evening in the village, the title of Manu's 1972 classic "Soir au Village".
As I toyyed with guitar I found myself developing Twikale's idea, and as raw as it was, I felt it captured my sombre mood. As always, I'm not sure which direction it will follow, but develop it surely will!
