Chi Sao Drills — Inside and Outside Pak-Da #
The inside and outside Pak Sao are some of the most frequently trained techniques in many Wing Chun styles. The Pak Sao “slapping hand” combined with a strike is also known as Pak-Da.
Here we go over some fundamental drills and details to develop both the inside and outside Pak-Da from Chi Sao.
Inside Pak-Da Drills ##
1. Inside Pak-Da after side switch (0:44)
Outside Pak-Da Drills ##
1. Outside Pak-Da (4:46)
2. React to Pak-Da by shortening the arm (6:08)
2. React to Pak-Da by evading with Toi Ma and Man-Wu (7:17)
Pak-Da Details ##
To make the Pak-Da work a number of basics have to be in place:
The Pak-Da is normally applied against an opponent's moving arm, not against a stationary guard.
The Pak Sao needs to be applied close to the wrist to exploit leverage against the opponent.
At completion, the Pak Sao needs to be in a position to cover against the other arm.
The Pak and the accompanying strike need to be performed as a simultaneous action: the Pak Sao opens a windows that the strike travels through.
The Pak Sao must not push towards the opponent, but must displace the incoming force to the side. There is a related motion which has the energy going forward, like a punch. Make sure to not confuse this motion with the Pak Sao in the Pak-Da.
