The incredibly gifted and esoteric frontman for Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. Yet another singer at the forefront of 90s rock, Maynard has garnered much acclaim for both his incredible power in his higher range, as well as his emotional and poignant delivery throughout his body of work. His most well known trait is his ability to sing throughout the fourth octave with incredible power, being able to sustain notes up to C5 to lengths thought almost inhumanly possible, yet only using this ability in a very tasteful way, reserving it only for the most colossal climaxes. His screaming ability should not be overlooked as well, using great use of massive distortion whenever possible to give his songs the most aggressive delivery if needed. Despite having a fairly light timbre otherwise, Keenan has an unprecedentedly strong lower range, while often only used in a tongue-in-cheek sense (as heard throughout the first Puscifer album), is still very melodically sound and can used to strong intimidating effect as well (such as in "Let's Have a War"). The most important and yet possibly most overlooked aspect of his voice however, is his strong sense of dynamics, being able to deliver exactly what a song needs, using his very profound and soothing mid range to great effect leading into some of the biggest emotional climaxes in rock when his higher range kicks in (this is best heard throughout the A Perfect Circle songs "Orestes" and "3 Libras", in my humble opinion). Overall, Maynard has definitely shown his place as one of the most interesting figures in rock and one of it's most powerful singers, the emotional weight and profundity of his work definitely makes him one of my top vocalists, and I will be interested to see which creative avenues he will continue to go down in the future.
