The theme of the 2025 World AIDS Day is “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response," highlighting the significant impact of the funding crisis on HIV programming, and showcasing the global community’s resilience to maintaining the scientific and programmatic advancements in HIV prevention and treatment. As HIV continues to disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, addressing syndemics (i.e., co-occurring epidemics of HIV, sexually transmitted infections, substance use, and mental health) is crucial to reduce the burden of HIV and accelerate the efforts to end AIDS.
This virtual World AIDS Day 2025 CIRA Talk features presentations by and discussion with three CIRA-affiliated investigators about their current research and approaches to addressing HIV syndemics. As part of the event, CIRA recognizes and honors the work of the late Dr. Merrill Singer, an impactful mentor and colleague who was affiliated with CIRA since its inception, for his groundbreaking work on syndemics and critical medical anthropology.

2. Jaimie Meyer, Yale Schools of Medicine and Public Health
