Meet Jane Cakebread, the woman newspapers dubbed “London’s most arrested.” This film follows her plain, document-led path: a Hertfordshire schoolgirl in a working family, a young housemaid in London homes, then a laundress taking day work when service ended. From there the record turns to the streets—drunk and disorderly, drunk and incapable, and the odd struggle with police during arrest—small offences that kept breaking what little stability she had.
Built from census lines, workhouse and infirmary books, police-court reports, prison registers, and the Habitual Drunkards Register, we show how a name on that blacklist shut pub doors and warm rooms, cutting off casual jobs and pushing her further outside. Short fines became short jail terms; short terms cost beds and work; the loop tightened. In the end, the infirmary wrote the final line: heart disease, alcohol, and chest illness after years of hard living.
It’s not a tale of one big crime. It’s a paper trail of many small ones—and a city system that managed disorder but rarely offered a way out.
