I play a true hidden gem in the Isle of Iona Golf course. Where I first learnt to swing a club. The Isle of Iona is a small island in the Inner Hebrides, off the Ross of Mull on the western coast of Scotland. It is mainly known for Iona Abbey, though there are other buildings on the island and a golf course that is a thing of beauty for any golf enthusiast. The course is fashioned from the Machair (grassy plains found on part of the northwest coastlines of Ireland and Scotland, in particular the Hebrides) this is an outstanding natural golf course. The course is also used as common grazing lands and is populated by sheep and cows, which adds added challenges to the round! Dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. It is also free, or £1 if you wish a scorecard (obtained from the Post Office). A spectacular 18 holes with beaches and dunes and wonderful views.
The Club Golfer takes on the first 11 holes which are played in the annual "Iona Open". The unique format sees competitors play the first 11 holes and then take off their two worst scores to leave a 9 hole score.
