Cancer of the mouth of the uterus ( cancer cervix)
Cancer cervix is the second most common cancer among Indian women.
It accounts for 16.5 percentage of all cancers that affects women.
There are 1 lakh new cases of cancer cervix diagnosed every year.
Usually this cancer doesn't have any early symptoms except
🩸White discharge
🩸 Painful urination
🩸Post coital bleeding.
So usually patients visit a Gynecologist only in late stages when they get symptoms!!

So it is very important to get your cancer screening done.

Cancer screening is usually done in women with no symptoms!!

It can help us diagnose cancer early even before it becomes cancer that is during the precancerous period itself and complete cure is possible!! 👍👍

Let us see how is cancer screening is done for cancer cervix:

Pap smear is a test which is used to diagnose cervical cancer in its precancerous period and to diagnose early cancer.

Cancer cervix is caused by a virus called as Human papilloma virus(HPV) which spreads through sexual intercourse!

All HPV infected women don't get cancer cervix!
Our body's natural immunity will clear the infection immediately!

High risk HPV types and those with persistent HPV infection are the ones which have the high chance of becoming cancer,!!

High grade lesions which are persistent for more than 1-2 years has the possibility to turn into CANCER!

How and when to do pap smear to detect cancer and precancerous lesions early??

🩸Papsmear should be done starting at the age of 21 years
🩸 Should be done once every 3 years
🩸 should be continued till 65 years
🩸HPV testing can be along with pap smear
🩸When HPV testing is done along with pap smear you can do the test once every 5 years!
🩸Stop screening at 65 years!
🩸If 3 consecutive pap smear tests are negative or
two consecutive HPV tests are negative you can stop screening!

Do you have to do screening after removal of uterus??

Yes! If it was done for carcinoma cervix.. otherwise not necessary!

How to protect from cancer cervix?
Get yourself vaccinated against HPV

Can be given from the age of 9 years upto the age of 45 years!!

Who need frequent screening?

HIV Infected women
Those with low immunity due to various causes!
