In this video, I’m sharing a completely experimental and intuitive way to tone cyanotype prints — a process I developed during a 16-week camping adventure with nothing but curiosity, kitchen supplies, and a desire to create something magical.
Rather than soaking your prints, this method uses brushes, TSP bleach, tannic acid, and hydrogen peroxide to “paint” directly onto your damp cyanotype — shifting blues into golden browns, creating soft shadows, and adding depth exactly where you want it. It’s part science, part instinct, and all art.
🧪 In this video, you’ll learn:
How to prep and dampen your cyanotype prints
The supplies you’ll need (most from your kitchen!)
How to use TSP, tea, and hydrogen peroxide as painting solutions
Tips for creating soft gradients, richer shadows, and unique toning effects
Why this technique is perfect for anyone who wants to experiment outside the rules
🌿 Toning doesn’t have to be intimidating — it can be playful, personal, and uniquely yours. This method lets you treat your print like a canvas and follow your intuition.
