We came across the music of Eiko Ishibashi after a conversation with Jim O’Rourke in his favourite Tokyo café (favoured because of the way the bust speakers distorted the orchestral music played). O’Rourke has been producer and occasional band member with Eiko over the past few years and his influence shows in the records he’s made with her, that same loose post-jazz feel and subtle nod to Bacharach, warmly polished instrumentation and slightly distracted vocals hinting at something else going on under the surface/between the lines.
Eiko Ishibashi is a Japanese multi-instrumentalist straddling two musical trajectories. The dreamy alt-pop productions she and O’Rourke create and her actions as part of Tokyo’s improv scene. She’s also just released a collaboration with noise titan Merzbow on Editions Mego and has played with such names as Keiji Haino, Tatsuya Yoshida, Oren Ambarchi, Charlemagne Palestine and many others.
