🔊 Nature Morte is pleased to inaugurate ARTSOUNDS - a virtual platform that aims to engage with global communities across different practices. Our first collaboration is with 12 alumni of Berklee College of Music, USA from around the world composing new music in response to artworks from Tanya Goel’s ‘𝘗𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘍𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘳’. The music has been curated by Vasundhara Gupta.
Born and raised in Kenya, Jason Sibi-Okumu is a soulful singer songwriter, whose timeless melodies and expressive lyrics captivate his audience. Diagnosed with chronic kidney failure at the age of fifteen, Jason turned to songwriting as a way to process the experience. After two years of dialysis, Jason had a successful kidney transplant in 2007; crediting the experience for adding depth, purpose and identity to his songwriting. Although relatively new to the music industry, Jason’s fan base is steadily growing as his dynamic performances, unique voice and honest writing continues to win him fans across the world.
“I had the honor of getting to put music to Tanya Goel’s Fractal 11. I was most drawn to the image of the two empty chairs and table. I thought about how, especially at this time, many of us are not able to be close to the people we care about. More and more we are having to settle for memories and dreams, instead of actual tangible experience. On the day I sat down to write for this project, someone really close to me was having a rough day. I felt frustrated that I couldn’t physically be there to comfort her. The mixture of the images in Fractal 11 and the emotional conundrum I was experiencing led to the song Black Coffee.” - Jason Sibi-Okumu
