PROA7PLUS: Wiring & Programming a Zooz ZEN16 MultiRelay

In this video Dylan from Alarm Grid shows you how to wire a Zooz ZEN16 Multi-Relay for the purpose of adding a separate high-current siren or strobe to the PROA7PLUS family of panels. There are many other potential uses for the ZEN16, but the ability to add a siren is a very popular one. Once all wiring connections have been properly made, you can plug in the transformer for the power supply.

Dylan describes the wiring for the siren and the relay and shows you how to make the connections. We use the same power supply to power both the relay and the siren or strobe, even though the ZEN16 comes with its own plug-in power supply. This is because the power supply will have a battery backup. This ensures that both the relay and the siren or strobe will remain operational in the event of an AC power failure. The PROA7PLUS has its own backup battery.

It's usually recommended that you exclude each Z-Wave device prior to attempting an inclusion. There are some devices where this is not necessary. On those devices, it's usually impossible to perform an exclusion as the device knows it has no Z-Wave network information to be excluded and won't provide you the opportunity to perform the action. Once the Zooz ZEN16 has been included with the PROA7PLUS you're ready to program scenes.

Unfortunately, at this point the relay will learn in as a light or switch. Also, all three relays will be treated as a single device. So if you turn on one relay, you turn on all three and when one is off, all are off. This is a limitation seen on most professional alarm systems. Most stand-alone Z-Wave controllers will allow you to control each relay individually. The problem there is that there is no way to program the relay to follow an alarm and a disarm on the alarm panel through those Z-Wave controllers.

Scene programming is easily done using Total Connect 2.0. You must program a scene for turning the relay on, and a separate scene for turning the relay off. Depending on how your panel is configured, you may need one scene to turn the relay on for any burglary alarm and another scene to turn the relay on for any fire alarm. You can also easily test your wiring and programming through Total Connect 2.0 by manually toggling the relay on and off.
