TIMELAPSE hiking the Le Morne Brabant

Le Morne Brabant is 556 metres (1,824 ft.) above sea level.
It is located in the South West part of the island of Mauritius and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and bears enormous cultural significance for the islanders.
The summit covers an area of over 12 hectares (30 acres) with many caves and overhangs on the steep slopes.
It is largely surrounded by the magnificent Mauritian lagoon and it is one of the must visit tourist sites in Mauritius.
The Le Morne Brabant’s impressive 3.5 kms hiking trail we managed in 1,5 hours (excluding the time for drinking break, snacks, watching the landscape, taking photos, etc.)

Please hike Le Morne as early as possible in the day. We started at 7:30, which was already too late, because of the high temperatures and high humidity. Better start at 6:45-7:00. One of the locals told us that it is not allowed to start hiking after noon!
If it has been raining strongly a day before that is not a good idea to go to Le Morne, because the way wood be too hard and dangerous to walk.
Don't carry heavy things on your back, take several bottles of water with you and put the hiking shoes on (no flipflops please!).

Timelapse begins at the trail entrance up to the mountain peak.
There is a book in a "wooden house" where you need to write the time when you start hiking and your name (is not there at the early hours!) for your safety.

The initial section of the hike has a very gradual incline, a well-beaten path and well-marked trail. This part is ok for everybody.
However around the half way mark the difficulty increases considerably. The path becomes less marked and at times much steeper, to the point that you will have to help yourself with your hands to climb over rocks.
In case you are afraid of hights better skip the second part of the route or book a guide (approximately for 1500 MUR).

At the first main viewpoint, there is a “checkpoint” hut and sign that warned that the climbing was about to get dangerous, and only experienced climbers should go ahead.
You will see a wire fence with a “Private Property – no trespassing” sign, you need to climb over this to get on the trail.
From here there will be more than one section of the climb where you will need to use your hands to pull yourself up and effectively climb over rocks.

Be careful, keep safe and don't miss the chance to hike the Le Morne Brabant!
