M198: What Deep-Sea Sediments tell us about volcanoes?

🌋 Mount Etna in Sicily is the largest active volcano in Europe. Its eastern flank extends far into the Mediterranean Sea. Previous studies have shown that it moves a few centimetres per year.

🚢 In February, the research vessel METEOR set off on a two-week expedition to map the entire flank of Mount Etna and to extend the selective measurements.

💡 The measurements included taking sediment samples. Sediment cores can, for example, provide precise information about the climate and ocean currents that once prevailed on our planet. The samples can also provide information about past volcanic eruptions, as in this expedition.

🌋 Der Ätna auf Sizilien ist der größte aktive Vulkan Europas. Seine Ostflanke reicht weit ins Mittelmeer hinein. Dass diese sich einige Zentimeter pro Jahr bewegt, konnten frühere Studien zeigen.

🚢 Im Februar war das Forschungsschiff METEOR unterwegs, um die Flanke des Ätna während der zweiwöchigen Expedition M198 flächendeckend zu kartieren und die punktuellen Messungen auszuweiten.

💡 Im Rahmen der Messungen wurden unter anderem Sedimentproben entnommen. Die Sedimentkerne können zum Beispiel konkrete Hinweise auf das Klima und die Meeresströmungen geben, die in der Vergangenheit auf unserer Erde geherrscht haben. Außerdem können die Proben, wie bei dieser Expedition, Informationen zu vergangenen Vulkanausbrüchen liefern.
