Bridging the 5 Pillars of Early Literacy: Strategies to Integrate the Big Ideas of Teaching Reading

Are you familiar with the 5 pillars of early literacy?

I’ve never loved the term “pillars” because it suggests that these are all separate.

I like to refer to them as 💡 The 5 Big Ideas of Early Literacy 💡 to emphasize the importance of integrating instruction across all 5 components to help students become skilled readers.

In this video, I’m talking about 3 ways to bridge the gap between these big ideas to get better results in your classroom.

She is a part-time assistant professor in the online Reading Science Program at Mount St. Joseph University and a founding member of a national alliance for supporting reading science in higher education. Dr. Stollar has worked as an educational consultant, school psychologist, and assistant professor in the school psychology program at The University of South Florida. She has provided professional development for teachers for the past 25 years. She has conducted research in the areas of assessment, early intervention, and collaborative problem-solving.
