Scotland's Crathes Castle is a 16th Century baronial home located near Banchory, Aberdeenshire and was home to the Burnett family. It is most well-known for it's incredible painted ceilings, a wooden ceiling that is the oldest in existence outside of royal palaces and the Green Lady ghost (the ghost of a servant who gave birth out of wedlock that Queen Victoria supposedly claimed to see). The painted ceilings really are a must-see, unlike any I have seen in other castles with a different theme and writing on each ceiling. The castle was given to the family by Robert the Bruce and stayed in the family 350 years until entrusted into the care of the National Trust, who now run it. Some family members still live on or around the estate.
Inside, there are bronze-age pots discovered in a former Loch, a quilt created by a family member, several personal effects and photos of the family and, Crathes' greatest treasure.the Horn of Leys given to the family by Robert the Bruce.
The walled gardens are laid out into 8 sections and include topiaries, fountains and thematic areas. The estate is open to the public free of charge and includes several trails of differing lengths and a brass rubbing trail to learn about exotic tree species. There is a gift shop and cafe and we enjoyed lunch from the cafe, sitting in the sunshine.
