"Friend of a Friend" was the first acoustic song Dave Grohl had ever written.
The song was written by Grohl in 1990 (and recorded in secret the same year), and it was about his first impressions of new bandmates singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain, and bassist Krist Novoselic. He first wrote it in Kurt's Olympia apartment when Grohl stumbled upon an acoustic guitar owned by Cobain (referring to the lyrics "It was his friend's guitar").
This version of the song was released in 1992 in a collection of songs (entitled Pocketwatch) under the pseudonym 'Late!'
On April 30, 1997, the song was recorded live for a BBC Evening Session. In 2005, Grohl revisited the song, recording it yet again for the acoustic disc of the Foo Fighters' In Your Honor. The song was also included on the band's live album Skin and Bones.
The 2005 re-release of this track was dedicated to Cobain.
-- Lyrics --
He needs a quiet room
With a lock to keep him in
It's just a quiet room
And he's there
He plays an old guitar
With a coin found by the phone
It was his friends guitar
That he played
He's never been in love
But he knows just what love is
He said nevermind
And no-one speaks
He thinks he drinks too much
Cos when he tells his too best friends
'I think I drink too much'
No-one speaks
No-one speaks
No-one speaks
He plays an old guitar
With a coin found by the phone
It was his friends guitar
That he played
When he plays
No-one speaks
No-one speaks
When he plays
No-one speaks
