Ever wondered why there are no direct local trains from Mumbai to Pune? Despite both cities being major hubs, the 120 km route is not served by Mumbai's suburban locals. The answer lies in the challenging Bhor Ghat section, which requires additional locomotives for steep gradients, making local train operations difficult. Additionally, track congestion due to long-distance express and freight trains, along with the division of railway zones (Mumbai under Central Railway's Mumbai Division and Pune under Pune Division), prevents a seamless suburban connection. Unlike short-distance Mumbai locals, this journey would take 3-4 hours, making express trains like Deccan Queen, Intercity Express, and Pragati Express more efficient options. While some MEMU trains and passenger services exist, frequent local train operations remain unfeasible.
