When Milwaukee departure control issued our IFR clearance, they gave us a ten-minute window of time to depart Burlington Municipal Airport. This restriction would keep us from monopolizing the airport in the event that other IFR aircraft would want to come in and land at Burlington.
This system is the one-in and one-out style of satellite airports. Because there is no control tower at Burlington, there is no way of know if it is safe for another aircraft to come in and land without conflicting with a different aircraft that is taking off.
Taking off into clouds is not something that you do lightly. Careful preparation ensures that the trip will end safely.
As we prepared for takeoff, a student on his first solo landed in a Skyhawk. Burlington is a small airport, but it has a vibrant flight training culture.
