This video talks through why I decided to use Critical Realism as a research paradigm. I also explain some of the key concepts in very simple language:
Stratified ontology.
Epistemology.
Epistemic fallacy.
TMSA or Transformational Model.
If you want to learn more about critical realism.
I would start by watching some of the videos on @CriticalRealism !
Then reading some published research which has used CR as a paradigm and some of the models as frameworks, for example:
This open access paper by Fletcher:
Fletcher, A. J. (2017). Applying critical realism in qualitative research: Methodology meets method. International Journal of Social Research Methodology: Theory & Practice, 20(2), 181–194. https://doi.org/10.1080/13645579.2016...
And this open access paper by Oladele and colleagues:
Oladele D, Clark AM, Richter S, Laing L. Critical realism: a practical ontology to explain the complexities of smoking and tobacco control in different resource settings. Glob Health Action. 2013 Apr 3;6:19303. doi: 10.3402/gha.v6i0.19303. PMID: 23561029; PMCID: PMC3617644.
Roy Bhaskar has many publications, the ones I find most accessible are:
1. A Realist Theory of Science - Roy Bhaskar.
2. The Possibility of Naturalism- Roy Bhaskar.
Also love the english translation of Explaining Society: Critical Realism in Social Sciences by Berth Danermark and others.
There are more resources which help with methodology, such as the paper by Wiltshire and Ronkainen:
A realist approach to thematic analysis : making sense of qualitative data through experiential, inferential and dispositional themes
I hope you enjoyed the video.
Would love to connect with more PhD students.
