I head out with my Canon EOS 5D and Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens to capture the iconic LNER Peppercorn Class A1 'Tornado' No. 60163 steam train as it passes along the dramatic Cumbrian Coast near Nethertown. It was a stormy grey summer afternoon, and the harsh coastal conditions made photography extremely challenging. Battling strong winds and salt spray, I decided to keep the lens cap on to protect my lens coating. Unfortunately missing the opportunity to shoot still photos of this beautiful steam locomotive. I did, however, manage to record some video of the Tornado as it powered past in the stormy weather. Join me for this stormy trainspotting adventure, where I reflect on the challenges of photographing in rough coastal weather and share tips for preparing better next time.
