Leh Journey Goes Wrong || Cloudbursts Landslides And Race Against Time

Caught in nature’s fury: our Baramulla–Leh journey on August 14 turned into a nerve-wracking adventure. We left Baramulla at dawn and wound through Sonamarg into the icy heights of Drass (often dubbed the world’s second-coldest inhabited place ). As we climbed Zoji La under heavy clouds, we knew weather was against us – just days earlier, torrential rain had caused a landslide at Zoji La that halted traffic . That morning, gloomy skies quickly unleashed powerful downpours, turning streams into rushing rivers and narrow mountain roads into mud tracks.

Hours later, as we neared the moonlike heights of Lamayuru, a sudden cloudburst sent flash floods surging across the highway . The main road was completely washed out, so we were forced onto a narrow old mountain track above Lamayuru – a treacherous dirt road that added nearly 25 km to our trip but let us avoid the wreckage. Just when we thought we were safe, another storm hit 20 km short of the famous Magnetic Hill. This time we took a newly-built BRO diversion road near Nimoo/Bazgo to skirt the flooded section. Each twist and turn – trucks stuck in mud, swirling debris at roadblocks, and pouring rain – kept our adrenaline high as dusk fell.
