Stereo passive ribbon microphones offer a ton of advantages. In this video, we take a look at the Royer Labs SF-12 and the AEA R88. Each mic has a different size, sonic character, price, and way in which they can be positioned on a mic stand. For each example, the mics were run directly into a Universal Audio Apollo and then the example was repeated using a Royer dBooster. Notice how the dBooster not only increases the level, but alters the sound of each microphone.
There is no processing on these tracks beside level matching. Each example was measured to ensure proper placement to the center of the stereo ribbon microphone in order to be as accurate as possible.
