I prayed all night and got no sign...
I waited still as hours died...
No voice came down from any sky...
The silence stayed and took its time...

I learned my prayers from a weathered book,
Read them slow like i misunderstood.
But the words fell flat on a boarded-up sky,
And the man in heaven never told me why.

The bottle spoke with a burning truth,
Said stay right here, forget your youth.
If God still walks these broken roads,
He passed me by with a lighter load.

I bent my knee on a tavern floor,
But faith don’t answer like it did before.

When God goes quiet, the bottle talks.
It knows my name, it knows my thoughts.
It keeps me warm when the mercy’s gone,
Sings me hymns till the night drags me on.
When God goes quiet, I stay awake.
With my only friend, and my last mistake.

The preacher said son, lay it down,
But his hands shook worse, than anyone in town.
I seen saints lie and make sinners kneel,
I learned real quick what don’t feel real.

This glass don’t judge, this glass don’t pray,
It just waits right here till I fade away.
If salvation’s meant for cleaner men,
Then I’ll drown right here in the shape I’m in.

I spoke my sins into cheap red wine,
It listened close, every god damn time.
