The Edson Tiger Light is a classic streamer pattern recognized for its bright, lively coloration and versatile profile, making it a reliable choice for trout anglers across generations. Characterized by its golden tinsel tag, peacock body, yellow bucktail wing accented with jungle-cock or brass eye cheeks, and subtle flash, the pattern imitates small baitfish with a touch of attractor-style flair. Its light, vibrant appearance excels in a range of water conditions, especially when trout are keyed in on fast-moving or brightly toned forage.
The fly was created in the 1920s by New England tier Bill Edson, one of the early innovators of streamer design. Edson crafted the Tiger series—Light and Dark variants—to offer trout anglers a more animated alternative to the traditional feather-wing streamers of the era. The Tiger Light drew inspiration from Dick Eastman’s pattern, “Dick’s Killer,” borrowing the concept of a compact, dynamic baitfish silhouette while refining its movement and visibility.
Soon after its introduction, the Edson Tiger Light earned a reputation as a prolific trout catcher on American rivers and streams, particularly for brown and rainbow trout. Its success later crossed the Atlantic, where anglers found it equally effective in the still waters of the UK. Over the decades, the Tiger Light has remained a staple in the streamer community, cherished for its enduring ability to entice fish and its place among the great traditional trout patterns.
