With the iPhone 16e, Apple shipped their first baseband that is entirely built in-house, the C1. So what's new, and how does it work internally?
This talk compares Apple's new baseband architecture to those from Qualcomm and Intel that we presented last year. We'll outline why this change is a significant improvement for researchers and dive into the security architecture of the baseband's firmware. Our updated tooling makes researching the C1 baseband even more accessible.
All iPhone basebands rely on carrier profiles to interface with the various cellular networks deployed worldwide. They contain a multitude of interesting configuration properties, such as those for 5G Standalone or RCS. However, there is no simple solution to compare their changes across iOS versions and baseband models. We introduce automatic tooling that enables you to easily monitor those changes.

He studies Computer Science in his Masters at the TU Darmstadt and works as a Student Researcher for the Secure Mobile Networking Lab (SEEMOO). His primary research interest is at the intersection of iPhones and cellular communication.
