FAQ’s for this pattern,
This pattern is a base to start from. I am not a professional pattern maker or seamstress.
For the buttons, I suggest 1/2" to 1". The thicker your loop elastic, the larger your button needs to be. But you need to be careful, you don't want the button too large or it will be difficult to topstitch around. If you are adding the button after the fact, you can get away with a larger size. I would not suggest a button smaller than 1/2", it won't be able to hold the elastic in place.
The material is whatever you have on hand as it is hard to buy right now. Some people are repurposing old shirts, some are using sheets, some are using fabric from their stash. I personally use a cotton quilters fabric as the outer fabric and flannel for my inner. I have quite a bit of both on hand. It has to be machine washable and dryable.
For the chin elastic, it depends on how stiff and stretchy your elastic is. I use a fairly stretchy 1\2" wide elastic that is about 4" long. If your elastic is stiff and not very stretchy, you might need a 5" piece. I would not go thinner than 1/2" wide or wider than 3/4" or your chin area will be too bulky.
For the loop elastic, I am using thinner hair rubber bands without the metal on them. I have also used a stretchy 1/4" elastic made into a loop. You want this piece pretty stretchy and thin enough to go around your button.
I use a scant 1/4" seam allowance on the inside and just under 1/8" when I topstitch. If I need a larger mask for a larger face, I increase my pattern by about 10%.
