How to cast clear resin parts with a high gloss.
In this video we explain some important tips for getting high gloss clear parts when casting clear, Polyurethane casting resin. For this video we cast WC-786. WC="Water Clear"
We sprayed a 2K (2 part) clear gloss from an automotive supply onto our patterns. This allowed the gloss effect to be captured by the mold and reproduced on each part. I was really curious how well this technique would work over skin texture as that is one of trickier surfaces to cast in clear and get a gloss effect and still retain a natural look. I sprayed the patterns with the 2K gloss, allowed them to set for at least a full day, and then molded them with TC-5130F fast setting platinum silicone. Platinum silicone is ideal for molding parts that will be cast in aliphatic clear resin as it does not exude alcohol which can create a slight fog on finished parts. This "fog" effect is typical of freshly made tin cure molds. I also warmed the molds to ~100F. Warming your silicone molds will help you get a better surface on your parts and aid in the curing of aliphatic clear resins when casting thin parts.
